Cambodian News in German Media – Saturday, 25.9.2010

The Mirror, Vol. 14, No. 683

Since my arrival in Germany on 13 September, the following reports were the only news about Cambodia I saw and heard.

On 13 September 2010 the German TV news Tagesschau carried a report under the heading:

A Country which Is an Important Supplier for German Suppliers: Textile Workers in Cambodia Striking

This report was motivated by the fact that products from Cambodia are sold by major German clothing and sports-wear companies, and therefore there is public interest to know about the working conditions in countries and companies supplying goods widely used in the country.

At the same place a map of Cambodia was also accessible [a Flash Player has to be installed in the computer to see it], and on 14 September 2010, an ARD radio program in German could be heard in Germany [format mp3] – referring to the minimal wage regulations of US$61, and the way in which the striking persons were handled by police.

And on 23 September 2010 the late evening news of the First Television Tagesthemen had again a report about the strikes in the garment industry in Cambodia.

To be part of a globalized system of trade means also to be part of international publicity. I thought readers of The Mirror might also be interested to see how Cambodian affairs are presented in Germany.
