Sunday/Monday, 4/5.3.2007: There Are More Than 2,000 Female Candidates Standing for the Commune Council Elections

The Mirror, Vol. 11, No. 498

“Phnom Penh: According to the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, there are more than 2,000 female candidates standing for the 2nd Mandate Commune Council Elections in 2007.

“Recently, Ms. Ing KanthaPhavy, the Minister in charge of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, said that if it comes to the point of politics, Khmer women might seem to feel fearful. But now, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs provided Khmer women with education and knowledge so as to strengthen their capacities and to increase their awareness, especially the gender awareness, making them clearer about their roles and prepare them to become future leaders.

“The Minister also said, ‘First of all, to become leaders, we must have confidence in ourselves.’ But at present, generally speaking, our women have already self-confidence to participate in deciding on various policies for serving the interests of Khmer society.

“Ms. Ing KanthaPhavy said that the 21,068 female candidates who stand for the 2007 Commune Council Election are equal to 20.88% of all candidates. But for the 2002 Commune Council Elections there were only 12,375 female candidates, equal to 16.44%.

“She added that the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and the National Council for Cambodian Women cooperated with national and international non-government institutions who encouraged women to become leaders with the intention of strengthening the leadership within the government, the political parties, and the private sector, so that they equally can contribute to building the society and developing the nation.

“Notably, ‘Women are the strong backbone of the economic and social development’ as clearly defined in the Royal Government of Cambodia’s Rectangular Strategy Policies.

“The 2nd Mandate Commune Council Election will take place on 1 April 2007 with the participation of 12 political parties. In this election, there is a total of 100,000 candidates, and there are also more than 20% female candidates.” Rasmei Kampuchea, Vol.15, #4227, 4-5.3.2007
